Abia Deputy Governor Emetu Pledges Support For Ohuhu Youth Day, Commends Youths For Community Development
The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, has commended the Ohuhu Welfare Union Youth Wing for its commitment to youth empowerment, moral reorientation, and community development. Receiving members of the group at his office in Government House, Umuahia, Emetu described the youths as strategic partners in the progress of Abia State. He particularly lauded their campaign against drug abuse and cultism, noting that such initiatives align with the developmental vision of the Alex Otti-led administration.
Emetu acknowledged the contributions of Ohuhu youths during the 2023 general elections, stating that their support helped in the emergence of the present government. He said the administration has ushered in a new era for Abia and will continue to partner with responsible youth organisations that promote peace, productivity and social development. The Deputy Governor emphasized the need for greater youth participation in governance, adding that the future of any society depends on the quality and conduct of its young people. He also urged political stakeholders to prioritize national elections, noting that success at that level strengthens a party’s capacity to attract development.
On governance and planning, Emetu called for closer collaboration between federal and state lawmakers to ensure equitable distribution of projects and to avoid duplication. Speaking on the forthcoming Ohuhu Youth Day scheduled for August 22, he assured the delegation of government support. “Government support is not tied to awards. Public service must be driven by the desire to improve the lives of the people,” he said, while confirming his readiness to attend and support the event.
Earlier, the President of the Ohuhu Welfare Union Youth Wing, Mr. Ihenaocha Uchenna, congratulated Emetu on his emergence as Deputy Governor, describing him as a source of inspiration to young people in Abia. He commended Governor Otti for appointing a youthful deputy, saying it has boosted confidence that leadership opportunities are now open to younger generations. Uchenna explained that the Ohuhu Youth Day, celebrated every four years, is aimed at promoting the cultural heritage of Ohuhu people and celebrating youth excellence. He formally invited Emetu to the August 22 event where the union intends to honour him, and disclosed that members are also engaged in anti-drug and anti-cultism sensitization campaigns in secondary schools in partnership with the NOA.
In a vote of thanks, Mr. Nkwachukwu Ogwugbu appreciated the Deputy Governor for granting them audience, describing it as proof of the administration’s commitment to youth inclusion. He said the meeting reinforced the belief that participatory governance is possible when government and youth work together for the growth and development of the community.
