Gov. Alex Otti Advocates Digital Education, Approves NOUN Study Centre in Aba

The Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has urged Nigerians to fully embrace digital and distance learning, describing it as essential in today’s fast-evolving global landscape.

Governor Otti made this call while hosting a delegation from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), led by its Vice-Chancellor, Uduma Orji Uduma, at his office. He commended the institution for pioneering virtual education in Nigeria long before it became globally mainstream.

Reflecting on the rapid shift in communication and learning methods, the governor noted that virtual interactions through platforms like Zoom and Google Meet have redefined how people connect and acquire knowledge worldwide.

According to him, digital education is no longer optional but a necessity. As part of efforts to expand access to quality education, Governor Otti approved the establishment of a NOUN study centre in Aba.

He described the decision as straightforward and directed the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) to identify a suitable temporary location pending the development of a permanent site.

In addition, the governor instructed the Commissioner for Tertiary Education to conduct a feasibility study aimed at upgrading the existing NOUN study centre in Umuahia. This move aligns with the administration’s broader commitment to improving educational infrastructure across the state.

Governor Otti reiterated his government’s strong investment in education, revealing that approximately 20% of the state’s annual budget has been allocated to the sector over the past three years. He also disclosed plans to commission three smart schools soon, further strengthening digital learning in the state.

Earlier, Professor Uduma highlighted the importance of open and distance learning in the 21st century, noting that NOUN currently operates over 120 study centres nationwide, with only a limited number in the South-East region. He appealed for state support in expanding access through the proposed Aba centre and upgrading existing facilities.

The Vice-Chancellor also commended Governor Otti’s developmental strides, stating that his administration’s people-focused initiatives have earned widespread recognition across Nigeria.
