Governor Alex Otti has taken a significant step toward transforming Abia State into a major commercial and logistics hub with the commencement of a feasibility study for the proposed Azumini Seaport project.
The initiative, which is being pursued in partnership with China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), is aimed at evaluating the viability of developing a modern seaport in Azumini, a move expected to boost economic activities across Abia and the wider South-East region.
According to the Abia State Government, the proposed seaport is designed to position the state as a strategic gateway economy by providing direct maritime access to businesses, particularly manufacturers operating within the renowned Aba industrial cluster. The project is expected to enhance trade efficiency, lower transportation and cargo handling costs, and strengthen the region’s connection to international markets.

If successfully implemented, the Azumini Seaport could serve as an alternative cargo corridor, helping to reduce pressure on existing ports in Lagos while creating a new logistics route linked to global shipping networks through the Imo/Azumini Blue River axis.
The feasibility study will comprehensively assess the project’s technical, economic, environmental, and social sustainability. Key areas of evaluation include dredging requirements, port infrastructure design, transportation connectivity through road and rail networks, environmental impact considerations, and potential private-sector investment frameworks.
The proposed seaport aligns closely with Governor Otti’s “Rebuild Abia” development agenda, which prioritizes infrastructure expansion, economic growth, job creation, and increased competitiveness for local industries. Analysts believe the project could significantly improve export opportunities for businesses in the state while generating long-term revenue streams for the government.
Beyond its impact on Abia, the project could contribute to Nigeria’s maritime sector by establishing an additional port corridor alongside existing facilities such as the Onne Port and the proposed Ibom Deep Seaport.
Following the completion of the feasibility study, stakeholders are expected to determine the project’s implementation timeline, financing structure, and the necessary federal approvals required for execution.
