Former Nigerian Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, received massive support during the public presentation of his autobiography titled “My Life of Duty and Allegiance” held in Abuja on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
The event attracted prominent political leaders, diplomats, military officers, and business moguls from across the country, highlighting Gowon’s lasting influence in Nigeria’s history and public service.
Retired General Theophilus Danjuma made the largest contribution at the ceremony, donating ₦3 billion in support of the autobiography launch. Danjuma, who served as the Chief Presenter at the event, was represented by retired General Martin Luther Agwai.
In addition to the financial donation, Danjuma also sponsored the purchase and distribution of 12 copies of the autobiography to the libraries of each of the 20 universities that awarded Gowon honorary doctorate degrees. The gesture was described as a move to preserve and promote Nigeria’s historical and leadership legacy for future generations.
Business billionaire Aliko Dangote also contributed ₦500 million toward the event, while Abdul Samad Rabiu purchased copies of the book valued at ₦25 million.
Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, represented President Bola Tinubu at the high-profile gathering, which celebrated Gowon’s decades of leadership and national service.
The 20-chapter memoir reflects on Gowon’s military career, leadership journey, and role in shaping Nigeria’s political history. During the event, Matthew Kukah reviewed the autobiography and commended its historical significance and contribution to national discourse.

The autobiography launch has continued to generate reactions nationwide, with many Nigerians praising the large-scale support shown by influential figures from both the military and business communities.
