House of Reps Drops Own State Police Bill, Advances Executive Proposal in Landmark Move

House of Representatives Withdraws Own State Police Amendment, Advances Executive Bill

The House of Representatives has withdrawn its own proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish state police, paving the way for consideration of the Executive’s version of the bill.

During plenary on Tuesday, lawmakers passed the Executive-sponsored State Police constitutional amendment bill through its first and second readings. The bill was subsequently referred to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for further legislative consideration.

The development marks a significant step in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to reform its policing structure amid growing calls for improved security across the country. By adopting the Executive’s proposal instead of pursuing a separate legislative version, the House aims to streamline the constitutional amendment process and avoid duplication.

The Committee on Constitutional Review is expected to scrutinize the bill, receive necessary inputs from stakeholders, and make recommendations before it returns to the House for further debate and voting.

If eventually approved by the National Assembly and endorsed through the constitutional amendment process, the proposed legislation could pave the way for the creation of state police, a reform many believe will strengthen grassroots security, improve intelligence gathering, and enhance the ability of states to respond to local security challenges.
