VIDEO: Makinde Demands UN Probe into Shocking Oriire School Abduction After Victims’ Rescue

Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde Urges UN to Probe Oriire Schoolchildren Abduction After Victims’ Rescue

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has called on the United Nations and international human rights organizations to investigate the shocking abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, describing the incident as both “grave and unusual.”

The governor made the appeal after officially receiving the rescued victims on Monday, July 13, 2026, following their release from captivity.
The victims, comprising 39 pupils and seven teachers from three schools in Oriire, were kidnapped by heavily armed gunmen on May 15, 2026. During the attack, two male teachers lost their lives while trying to protect the children, sparking nationwide outrage over the growing insecurity affecting schools across Nigeria.

After spending nearly two months in captivity, the remaining victims regained their freedom on July 10, 2026, during a coordinated federal security operation. Authorities confirmed that no ransom was paid before their rescue.

Speaking during the reception, Governor Makinde expressed gratitude that the children and teachers returned alive but stressed that many unanswered questions remain surrounding the incident. He urged the United Nations, international human rights bodies, and other independent organizations to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the abduction, the prolonged captivity, and any possible institutional failures that may have contributed to the tragedy.

According to the governor, such an investigation is necessary not only to establish accountability but also to strengthen measures that will prevent similar attacks on schools in the future.

The rescue has also brought to light disturbing accounts from survivors. Principal Rachael Folake Alamu recounted the traumatic experience, revealing that the captives were forced to embark on exhausting treks through dense forests under harsh conditions.

She disclosed that children who cried or made noise were reportedly flogged by the kidnappers, while male captives endured particularly severe treatment throughout the ordeal. The emotional testimonies have reignited public concern over the safety of students and teachers in Nigeria and intensified calls for greater transparency regarding the country’s recurring wave of school kidnappings.

Security experts and civil society groups have continued to emphasize the need for stronger protection of educational institutions, noting that repeated attacks on schools threaten access to education and undermine public confidence in national security efforts.

The successful rescue of the Oriire victims has brought relief to their families and communities. However, Governor Makinde insists that justice must go beyond the rescue itself. He believes a comprehensive international investigation could help uncover the full circumstances of the incident, ensure accountability where necessary, and contribute to lasting reforms aimed at protecting Nigerian schoolchildren.

As calls for an independent inquiry grow louder, many Nigerians hope the lessons from the Oriire tragedy will strengthen efforts to end school abductions and safeguard the nation’s education system.
