Umuahia North Former Councillors Endorse Otti, Adopt Obi Aguocha Ahead of 2027

The Association of Former Elected Councillors of Abia State, Umuahia North Chapter, has expressed support for Governor Alex Otti’s administration and adopted the member representing Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Obi Aguocha, as its preferred candidate for the 2027 National Assembly election.

The former councillors made their position known on Monday, August 31, 2026, during a familiarisation meeting with Aguocha at the Umuahia North Local Government Area.

The association comprises former elected councillors who served across Abia State between 1999 and 2022. The meeting provided an avenue for the former lawmakers at the grassroots level to interact with Aguocha on issues concerning their welfare, development and other matters of mutual interest.

A major issue discussed during the meeting was the payment of outstanding entitlements owed to former elected councillors covering the period between 1999 and 2022.

The association commended the Abia State Government, led by Governor Alex Otti, for its commitment towards settling the long-standing financial obligations owed to the former councillors.

However, the group appealed to the governor to intervene in the implementation of the payment arrangement, stating that although some members had received the first tranche of their outstanding entitlements, several others were yet to benefit.

According to the association, the second and third tranches of the payments also remain outstanding.

The former councillors therefore urged Governor Otti to use his good offices to ensure that all eligible beneficiaries are captured in the payment process and that the outstanding entitlements are released in line with the government’s commitment.

While making the appeal, the association stressed that it appreciated the steps already taken by the Otti administration to address the issue, describing its request as an effort to ensure that the process is successfully concluded for every affected former councillor.

The group also declared its support for Governor Otti ahead of the 2027 governorship election, expressing its willingness to work for his re-election.

In another major decision, the association formally adopted Rt. Hon. Obi Aguocha as its preferred candidate for the 2027 House of Representatives election in the Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South Federal Constituency.

The former councillors described Aguocha as a dependable representative and expressed confidence in his ability to continue advocating for development, improved welfare and effective representation of the people of the constituency.

They pledged to support his return to the National Assembly while also working towards the consolidation of what they described as the achievements of the present administration in Abia State.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment by the former councillors to work collectively towards the re-election of Governor Alex Otti in 2027 and the return of Rt. Hon. Obi Aguocha to the House of Representatives.
