SAD: House of Reps Lawmaker Dies in Abuja

House of Representatives member Hon. Yaya Tongo dies in Abuja after illness, sparking tributes from colleagues and constituents.

The Nigerian House of Representatives has been thrown into mourning following the death of Hon. Yaya Bauchi Tongo, the lawmaker representing the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State.

Hon. Tongo reportedly passed away on Friday, June 12, 2026, at Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja after battling an undisclosed illness.

The news of his death was made public by former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, who revealed that he had visited the late lawmaker at the hospital just hours before his passing.

According to Pantami, he arrived at the medical facility alongside Alhaji Bappa Ahmad Abdullahi and other associates, where they spent time praying for the lawmaker and offering support to his family members who were present at the hospital.

The former minister disclosed that he became deeply concerned after witnessing the severity of Hon. Tongo’s health condition during the visit. Despite the worrying circumstances, he said they remained hopeful and continued to place their trust in God for his recovery.

However, only a few hours after leaving the hospital, Pantami received the heartbreaking news that the federal lawmaker had passed away.

The death of Hon. Yaya Tongo marks a significant loss for the people of Gombe, Kwami, and Funakaye constituencies, whom he represented in the National Assembly. Colleagues, political associates, supporters, and constituents have continued to express shock and grief over the development.

Tributes have also continued to pour in from political leaders and community stakeholders, who described the late lawmaker as a dedicated public servant committed to the welfare and development of his constituents.

As family members, friends, and political associates mourn his passing, prayers are being offered for the peaceful repose of his soul and for strength for those he left behind.
