JUST IN: Imo North Aspirant Sues NDC, INEC Over Alleged Denial of 2027 Senatorial Ticket

Imo North 2027: Isaac Nwachukwu Drags NDC and INEC to Court Over Senatorial Ticket Dispute

A senatorial aspirant for Imo North, Isaac Nwachukwu, has instituted a legal action against the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at a Federal High Court sitting in Owerri, Imo State, seeking official recognition as the party’s candidate for the 2027 general election.

The lawsuit, filed on Wednesday, stems from an alleged dispute over the party’s senatorial nomination process for the Imo North Senatorial District.

According to court documents, Nwachukwu is asking the court to compel both the NDC and INEC to recognise him as the duly nominated candidate of the party for the forthcoming 2027 elections.

The aspirant alleged that despite fulfilling all stipulated requirements, including the payment of ₦25 million to the party for support and nomination forms, he was unfairly denied the opportunity to secure the party’s ticket.

Nwachukwu argued that the action taken by the party was unjust and inconsistent with the expectations established during the nomination process. He maintained that his financial commitment and compliance with party guidelines entitled him to fair consideration in the selection exercise.

The case has now shifted attention to the internal democratic processes of political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, as stakeholders continue to advocate for transparency, accountability, and adherence to electoral guidelines.

Political analysts believe the outcome of the suit could have significant implications for candidate selection procedures within political parties and may influence future disputes surrounding party primaries and nominations.

Neither the Nigeria Democratic Congress nor INEC had publicly responded to the allegations at the time of filing this report.

The Federal High Court is expected to determine whether Nwachukwu’s claims warrant judicial intervention and whether he should be officially recognised as the NDC’s candidate for the Imo North Senatorial District in the 2027 general election.
