A Nigerian technology firm, Terra Industries, has unveiled a suite of autonomous defense solutions designed to strengthen the country’s fight against insurgency and banditry. The systems were showcased at the company’s facility in Abuja, highlighting innovations aimed at improving battlefield safety and operational efficiency.
The demonstration featured advanced interceptor drones capable of neutralizing aerial threats, as well as unmanned ground vehicles engineered for detecting and clearing improvised explosive devices (IEDs). In addition, the startup presented sophisticated battlefield intelligence software designed to enhance real-time decision-making for security forces.
Speaking during the event, Terra Industries CEO Nathan Nwachukwu emphasized the importance of developing homegrown defense technologies. He noted that Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges, including over a decade of insurgency involving drone attacks and roadside explosives, require innovative and locally driven solutions to reduce dependence on foreign systems.
Military officials also expressed optimism about the new technologies. Major General Babatunde Alaya of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) commended the systems for their potential to reduce troop casualties and improve mission outcomes. He further revealed plans for frontline deployment through an existing partnership with the startup.
Terra Industries has reportedly secured $34 million in funding from a mix of local and international investors, including backing linked to global tech entrepreneur Joe Lonsdale. The investment is expected to accelerate the development and deployment of these defense solutions across critical regions.
