Oshiomhole Says Peter Obi’s Political Rise Was Driven by Naira Redesign Crisis
Former Edo State Governor and Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has described Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi as a politician whose popularity during the 2023 general election was significantly influenced by the Central Bank of Nigeria’s controversial naira redesign policy.
Speaking during a political discussion, Oshiomhole characterised Obi as “a trader,” arguing that traders are generally inclined toward short-term planning rather than long-term strategic projections. According to him, traders often focus on business cycles that span between three and six months, a mindset he suggested differs from the long-term vision required for national leadership.
The senator also linked Obi’s surge in public support to the economic hardship caused by the naira redesign policy introduced under the leadership of former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele.
Oshiomhole alleged that the policy emerged from Emefiele’s frustration after he failed in his bid to contest Nigeria’s presidency. He claimed that the cash scarcity and widespread difficulties experienced during the implementation of the policy created public dissatisfaction, which ultimately benefited Obi’s presidential campaign.
According to Oshiomhole, the widespread anger generated by the naira redesign exercise played a major role in shaping the political atmosphere that boosted the Labour Party candidate’s appeal ahead of the 2023 elections.
