PDP Faction Names Jonathan as 2027 Presidential Candidate Despite Venue Blockade
A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has formally announced former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, despite disruptions that forced a last-minute change of venue.
The faction, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, ratified Jonathan’s emergence during a brief 20-minute affirmation meeting held at the party’s office in Garki, Abuja. The event was moved after security personnel reportedly prevented delegates and party officials from accessing the initially scheduled venue in Wuse 2.
Although Jonathan was declared the faction’s presidential flagbearer, the former Nigerian leader did not attend the ceremony and has yet to publicly confirm any intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.
In his absence, veteran politician and PDP chieftain Jerry Gana received the certificate of return on his behalf. The document was subsequently handed over to Fred Agbedi, a serving lawmaker representing Bayelsa State, who will keep it in custody pending Jonathan’s final decision on whether to accept the nomination.

The development highlights the deepening leadership crisis within the PDP as rival factions continue to battle for control of the party ahead of the 2027 elections. The Makinde-Turaki group proceeded with the nomination despite existing court judgments that reportedly favor a separate faction backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, which is also recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Political observers say the latest move could further intensify internal divisions within the opposition party, raising fresh questions about its unity and preparedness for the upcoming presidential primaries.
