Peter Obi Explains Defection to NDC

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has explained that the worsening condition of Nigeria and the urgent need for national rescue influenced his decision to leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking after his formal defection, Obi revealed that he joined the NDC alongside Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso with a shared vision of advancing a new Nigeria grounded in justice, competence, accountability, and compassion for ordinary citizens.

According to him, the move was not driven by anger, personal ambition, or political convenience, but rather by deep reflection on the country’s current challenges. He stressed that Nigeria is at a critical crossroads and requires urgent intervention to redirect its trajectory.

Obi reiterated his long-standing belief that politics should prioritize the welfare of the people rather than personal gain or positions. He lamented the growing hardship across the nation, noting that millions of Nigerians are struggling to afford basic necessities, while businesses continue to collapse and hope among young people is fading.

Explaining his exit from the ADC, Obi pointed to persistent internal crises and what he described as orchestrated legal battles aimed at sidelining key political actors. He noted that similar challenges influenced his earlier departure from the Labour Party. Despite this, he expressed gratitude to the ADC leadership, particularly David Mark, for their support and collaboration, as well as appreciation to Atiku Abubakar and other party leaders.

Obi also called on the Nigerian government to avoid fostering internal disputes and unresolved litigations within political parties, warning that such actions could weaken democracy. He emphasized that a healthy democratic system depends on strong institutions, credible opposition, and the freedom of citizens to make choices without fear or manipulation.

Describing the current state of the nation as one of the most challenging periods in its history, Obi highlighted rising poverty, widespread hunger, persistent insecurity, and declining business activities. He urged leaders to focus on competence, character, and compassion rather than division or propaganda.

He maintained that his move to the NDC reflects a continuation of his commitment to building a Nigeria where leadership is rooted in service, public resources are managed responsibly, and institutions function independently. He added that every Nigerian, regardless of background, deserves dignity, security, and hope.

Obi concluded by calling on Nigerians especially youths and women to remain resilient and hopeful. He encouraged citizens not to lose faith in the country, emphasizing that meaningful change comes through persistence, sacrifice, and a collective commitment to what is right.
