Aisha Yesufu Withdraws From NDC FCT Senatorial Race Ahead of 2027 Elections
Prominent Nigerian activist and political figure Aisha Yesufu has officially withdrawn from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) senatorial race for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), ending her brief bid for the 2027 general elections.
Yesufu announced her decision on Friday after the party reportedly decided not to conduct primaries for the FCT Senate seat. The development effectively brought an end to her ambition of representing Abuja in the National Assembly under the platform of the NDC.
In a statement shared with supporters, Yesufu explained that the party would only proceed with primaries for House of Representatives positions in the FCT.
According to her, “Our party has decided not to conduct primaries for the Senatorial seat in FCT Abuja. It however intends to conduct primaries for House of Representatives.”
The activist, who recently joined the NDC after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC), had declared her interest in the FCT senatorial race earlier this month. Her entrance into the race attracted attention from supporters and political observers, especially due to her vocal role in Nigerian politics and advocacy for accountability and good governance.
Although stepping away from the contest, Yesufu urged her supporters to remain calm and focused on the broader political objective ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
She also expressed gratitude to those who supported her #AishaForSenate campaign and assured residents of the FCT that she would continue engaging with communities across the six area councils in Abuja.
Political analysts believe the latest development reflects ongoing internal realignments within the NDC as parties continue preparations for the 2027 general elections. Reports have also suggested that another aspirant may emerge as the preferred candidate for the FCT senatorial ticket.

Despite withdrawing from the race, Yesufu remains one of the most influential activist voices in Nigeria’s political landscape, especially among young voters and supporters of opposition politics.
