The Nigerian entertainment industry has been plunged into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor and academic, Patrick Okoye, popularly known as “Energy.”
News of his passing emerged on Friday after a statement was shared via his official Instagram page, sparking an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, students, and fans across the country.
Beyond his successful acting career, Okoye was a respected lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, where he played a significant role in mentoring and training aspiring actors, filmmakers, and creative professionals.
His death was later confirmed by fellow Nollywood actor Ken Erics, who expressed deep sorrow over the loss. In a heartfelt tribute shared on social media, Erics revealed that he had spoken with Okoye shortly before learning of his death, describing the news as both shocking and heartbreaking.
According to Erics, the late actor was more than just a colleague in the film industry. He was a mentor, teacher, and source of inspiration for countless young entertainers. He recalled how Okoye encouraged him to pursue Theatre Arts and remained supportive throughout the early stages of his professional journey.
The actor praised Okoye’s dedication to nurturing talent, noting that he consistently offered guidance, career advice, and opportunities to younger colleagues seeking to establish themselves in the entertainment industry. Many successful figures in Nollywood, he said, benefited from the veteran actor’s mentorship and encouragement.
Erics also reflected on accompanying Okoye to auditions during his university years, describing him as a passionate educator who invested time and effort in helping students refine their performance skills. He noted that the late actor remained actively involved in theatre productions and was highly respected for his contributions both on stage and in film.

In addition to acting, Patrick Okoye was widely recognized for his talents as a dancer, singer, and choreographer. His influence extended beyond the screen, as he introduced many young creatives to practical aspects of performance, production, and stagecraft.
Describing the loss as a major blow to Nollywood, Erics expressed gratitude for the impact Okoye had on his life and career. He noted that their relationship evolved from teacher and student to professional colleagues who later worked together on various projects.
A native of Anambra State, Okoye earned widespread recognition for his portrayal of traditional rulers, village elders, and community leaders in numerous Nollywood productions. His commanding screen presence and memorable performances made him a familiar face among movie audiences across Nigeria and beyond.
Throughout his career, he shared the screen with some of Nollywood’s most celebrated stars, including Patience Ozokwor, Osita Iheme, Chinedu Ikedieze, Yul Edochie and Rita Arum.
Some of the productions that contributed to his popularity include Midnight Love, Old School, Finding a Wife, The Lion, The Jagaban, and Over My Dead Body.
