AIG Kanayo Uzuegbu Dies After Battle With Cancer, Governor Otti Mourns
The Nigeria Police Force has been thrown into mourning following the death of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 9 Headquarters, Umuahia, Kanayo Uzuegbu, after a reported battle with cancer.
AIG Uzuegbu, who hailed from Obeakpu Umuaka in Njaba Local Government Area of Imo State, was widely respected for his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to public service throughout his distinguished career in the police force.
The announcement of his passing was made by Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, during his acceptance speech after emerging as the Labour Party’s governorship candidate for a second term ahead of the 2027 election.
Expressing deep sorrow over the loss, Governor Otti described the late police chief as a diligent and hardworking officer who served Nigeria with unwavering commitment and integrity. He noted that Uzuegbu’s contributions to national security and law enforcement would not be forgotten.
The governor also offered prayers for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul and asked God to grant his family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones the strength to bear the painful loss.

In honour of the late AIG, a minute’s silence was observed at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, where Governor Otti addressed party supporters and stakeholders.
