Tension gripped parts of Anambra State on Sunday night after suspected gunmen reportedly attacked the convoy of the Chief of Staff to Governor Chukwuma Soludo along the Amansea-Ufuma axis near Awka, the state capital.
The attack, which occurred during a security escort operation, resulted in the death of two police officers who were attached to the convoy. Reports indicate that the officers engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle while attempting to secure the convoy and protect its occupants.
According to information made available by security sources, the convoy was travelling through the Amansea-Ufuma Road when the gunmen allegedly launched a surprise attack, opening fire on the security team. The officers reportedly responded immediately, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
The Chief of Staff, Dr. Ben Nwankwo, was said to have escaped unharmed as security operatives successfully ensured the safety of other members of the convoy despite the deadly confrontation.
Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Command disclosed that the slain officers lost their lives while repelling the attack and safeguarding the principal they were assigned to protect. The command described their actions as courageous and vowed that those responsible for the assault would be brought to justice.
Following the incident, security operatives reportedly launched a manhunt for the attackers, while intelligence-driven operations have been intensified across the area. Authorities have also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide useful information that could assist ongoing investigations.
The attack has raised fresh concerns over security challenges in parts of the South-East, despite recent efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb criminal activities in the region.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State Police Command reassured residents of its commitment to maintaining peace and protecting lives and property across the state. Security presence has reportedly been strengthened along vulnerable routes as investigations continue.
