FG Approves Major NYSC Reforms, Extends Orientation Camp to Six Weeks

The Federal Government has approved a comprehensive overhaul of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), introducing a series of reforms aimed at modernising the scheme and preparing Nigerian graduates with practical skills for national development and the evolving job market.

A key feature of the reform is the extension of the NYSC orientation camp from the current three-week duration to six weeks. The additional time is expected to provide corps members with more intensive leadership, entrepreneurship, digital skills, and career development training that aligns with Nigeria’s economic priorities.

Under the new framework, military drills and parade exercises, which have traditionally formed part of orientation camp activities, will be removed. Instead, the programme will place greater emphasis on skills acquisition, innovation, civic responsibility, and professional development.

The Federal Government also approved the replacement of the long-standing Passing Out Parade (POP) with a formal graduation ceremony to mark the successful completion of the one-year national service.

To improve efficiency and transparency in the mobilisation process, a technology-driven call-up system will be introduced. The government said the new digital platform is expected to streamline deployment procedures while reducing administrative bottlenecks.

As part of measures to enhance the safety of corps members, deployment across the country will now follow a risk-sensitive approach, taking prevailing security conditions into consideration before postings are made.

In another significant change, corps members will be posted to their primary places of assignment based on their academic qualifications, professional skills, and competencies. The government believes this approach will improve productivity, encourage career growth, and enable corps members to make more meaningful contributions to their host organisations and communities.

The reform package also includes the introduction of a national grading system for NYSC orientation camps to improve infrastructure and service delivery across the country. In addition, corps members will receive redesigned NYSC uniforms as part of efforts to refresh the scheme’s identity.

The Federal Government further disclosed that the operational leadership of the NYSC will gradually transition to civilian administration, while the military will continue to provide security support and other essential assistance where required.

According to the government, the reforms are designed to reposition the NYSC as a more relevant institution capable of promoting leadership, entrepreneurship, digital innovation, and workforce readiness among Nigerian graduates.

To pave the way for the implementation of the reforms, the Attorney-General of the Federation has been directed to begin the process of amending the NYSC Act and other relevant regulations.

The proposed changes are expected to usher in one of the most significant transformations in the history of the NYSC, reflecting the Federal Government’s commitment to adapting the scheme to current national development goals and the demands of a rapidly changing economy.
