ABIA HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY PASSES INTO LAW THE BILL TO RETURN ALL ABSU CAMPUSES TO UTURU
The Abia House of Assembly, under the leadership of the Rt. Hon. Emmanauel Emeruwa, yesterday passed into law a bill (H.A.B. 6) to authorize the operation of the Abia State University, Uturu, in a single-campus system. Therefore, upon assent by Gov. Alex Chioma Otti, all campuses of the university across the state shall be relocated to Uturu without delay.
Fundamentally, the passage of this bill seeks to amend section 3 of Law No. 5 of 1995 that established the Abia State University, Uturu. This law shall therefore be cited as the Abia State University Amendment No. 3 Law.
Among other merits and relevance, the passage of this bill includes the following:
- To significantly diminish the colossal financial burden on the state associated with the operation of multiple campus systems.
- By eliminating and repealing the duplication of overhead and operational costs of multiple campus systems, the Abia State government can redirect funds towards core academic programs and infrastructural development at a single parent location. Critically, this law is intended to foster a more cohesive academic community and improve the quality of learning.
- The single campus system enables the concentration of faculties, research facilities, and library resources to create a more vibrant intellectual environment. This arrangement and operation model strengthens the university’s research capabilities and overall academic standards.
REPORT ON THE MURDER OF THE LATE MR. REUBEN OKWUKWA OF UMUIKAA
The Speaker also announced that during the executive session, members of the House met with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Umuikaa Police Station and the Commissioner for Police, Abia State, in response to the alleged brutal murder of Mr. Abraham Reuben Okwukwa, an Abian, by Nigerian Police Force officers. The speaker further reported that the matter was still under investigation.
MATTER OF URGENT PUBLIC IMPORTANCE
A Matter of Urgent Public Importance concerning the catastrophic erosion impacting his citizens in Oboro, Ikwuano, was also addressed to the house by Hon. Boniface Isienyi (Ikwuano). The member stated that if the erosion issue is not handled, it will cause further harm, especially during this rainy season, and urged the House to force the Ministry of Environment and NEWMAP in Abia State to help his constituents.
Additionally, the severe erosion at Amamba Uzuakoli Bende was another urgent public concern raised by Hon. Emmanuel Ndubuisi (Bende South). He clarified that he had brought up the issue during the 7th Assembly, with NEWMAP visiting the location at the time, and expressed sadness that nothing was done as a result. He stated that the erosion has engulfed a number of structures and is currently endangering the Umueze Amamba Community of Uzuakoli Bende. He asked the House to order the Ministry of Works to perform palliative work at the erosion site and to expedite the state’s efforts to develop long-term solutions to the threat in collaboration with the pertinent federal agencies.
The house resolved and ordered the Environment Committee to look into the matter and report back. In response to the discovery made by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Augustine Okezie, it also resolved to invite the NEWMAP Project Coordinator to defend it’s activities in the state.
