Senate Steps Down Probe of Alleged Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, Awaits ICPC Investigation
The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday suspended consideration of a motion seeking a comprehensive investigation into the budgetary allocation, activities, and controversies surrounding the purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), opting instead to await the outcome of an ongoing investigation by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
The motion, sponsored by Senator Suleiman Kawu, who represents Kano South Senatorial District under the All Progressives Congress (APC), was presented during plenary under a point of order.
Senator Kawu had called on the Senate to investigate the council over concerns relating to its alleged operations, funding, and public activities.
The proposed probe was aimed at establishing the legal status of the body, examining any budgetary allocations linked to it, and addressing the growing public concerns surrounding its activities.
However, after deliberations, lawmakers agreed that the Senate should refrain from commencing a parallel investigation while the ICPC is already handling the matter. The decision was taken to avoid duplication of efforts and allow the anti-corruption agency to conclude its inquiry without interference.
The ICPC had earlier confirmed that it is investigating allegations connected to the purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council following widespread public attention over its claims and activities.
By stepping down the motion, the Senate signaled its intention to await the findings of the anti-corruption commission before determining whether further legislative action is necessary.
The development comes amid increasing calls for transparency and accountability in the operations of organizations claiming links to government institutions. The outcome of the ICPC’s investigation is expected to provide clarity on the status, funding, and activities of the purported council.
