Projects, Performance, and People: Why Obi Aguocha’s Scorecard Strengthens His 2027 Re-Election Case

As political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, voters across the country are increasingly evaluating the performance of elected representatives. In Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State, much of the conversation revolves around whether Hon. Obi Aguocha has lived up to the expectations of those who entrusted him with the mandate in 2023.

For many constituents, his record over the past three years presents a compelling argument for continuity. Through legislative advocacy, infrastructure development, educational support, social interventions, and constituency empowerment programmes, Aguocha has built a profile that extends beyond parliamentary debates to practical grassroots development.

His recently released scorecard, shared on the Oganihu Ohuhu Project WhatsApp platform, outlines a broad range of achievements that reflect active representation at both the National Assembly and constituency levels.

Strong Legislative Performance

Hon. Obi Aguocha has emerged as one of Abia State’s most active lawmakers in the House of Representatives. According to National Assembly records, he ranks second among members of the Abia caucus in sponsoring bills and motions, behind only the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu.

Within just over three years, Aguocha has sponsored or co-sponsored 25 bills and six motions aimed at addressing national development and improving the welfare of Nigerians.

Among his notable motions are calls for compulsory Universal Basic Education to strengthen access to quality education and a proposal seeking reductions in domestic airline fares during festive periods, alongside tax incentives for airline operators to make air travel more affordable.

His legislative portfolio also includes several significant bills with long-term benefits for Abia State and the country.

Notable legislative initiatives include:

  • Co-sponsorship of the South East Development Commission Bill, which has been signed into law to promote regional development.
  • HB-1605, seeking the establishment of the Federal Medical Centre, Ikwuano, which has passed both chambers of the National Assembly and is awaiting Presidential assent.
  • HB-1659, proposing the establishment of the Federal Institute of Mining and Geosciences in Umuahia, currently awaiting Senate concurrence.
  • HB-128, co-sponsored to convert Michael Okpara Federal University of Agriculture into a conventional university.
  • A proposal for the establishment of the Federal University of Medical and Laboratory Sciences, Ulonna-Ohuhu, to expand educational and healthcare opportunities.

These legislative efforts demonstrate a commitment to institutional development while ensuring that the constituency remains well represented at the federal level.

Improving Educational Infrastructure

Education has remained one of Aguocha’s priority sectors. His interventions include the construction and rehabilitation of classrooms in several communities to provide a more conducive learning environment.

Completed and ongoing projects include classroom blocks at Ofeme and Ndume in Ibeku, rehabilitation of the two-storey classroom block at Amuzukwu Girls Secondary School, and ongoing works at Umunwanwa Primary and Secondary School.

Additional rehabilitation contracts have been awarded for Ohuhu Secondary School, Afugiri Primary School, Akpahia Primary School, Oriendu Primary School, Research Model Primary School, and Ariam Primary School.

Working with the Abia State Government, schools such as Ezeleke Primary School, Mission Hill Primary School, and Orieamenyi Primary School have also benefited from intervention projects.

These investments are expected to improve learning conditions for thousands of pupils and students across the constituency.

Expanding Access to Water, Power and Community Infrastructure

Recognising the importance of basic amenities, Hon. Aguocha facilitated the installation of solar-powered boreholes with overhead tanks in Isingwu and Ehume, Umuokpara, providing communities with improved access to clean drinking water.

His constituency has also witnessed the installation of approximately 2,500 solar-powered street lights across Ohuhu, Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South. Beyond improving nighttime visibility, the initiative has enhanced security and supported local economic activities.

In the electricity sector, he facilitated the restoration of power supply to Iyienyi Ibeku, replacement of twelve fallen electricity poles in Umuajameze, restoration of transformer infrastructure at Azikiwe Road and School Road, while also securing transformer installation projects in Ekeoba, Ariam Elu-Elu, Umuosu Ubakala and Okaiuga Nkwoegwu.

Road Development and Sports Facilities

Road infrastructure has equally received attention through ongoing projects, including the Umuochi Nkwoegwu Road, Amawom–Nkalunta–Okporoenyi Road and the Amoba–Eziama Ubakala Ring Road.

He also facilitated the Abia State Government’s takeover of the reconstruction of the strategic Umuahia–Ikwuano–Ikot Ekpene Road.

Following the rainy season, additional projects are expected to commence, including the second phase of the Ohuhu Ring Road, Oriendu–Ubaha Road, Ariam Usaka Ring Road, New Heaven Road in Umuobi, and the Nkata Alaike Nkwoegwu–College of Education Ofeme Road.

To encourage youth development through sports, Aguocha constructed a mini football pitch at the Umuahia South Local Government headquarters, while another football pitch project is currently underway at Nkwoegwu Primary and Secondary School.

Human Capital Development and Social Welfare

Beyond physical infrastructure, Hon. Aguocha has prioritised investments in people.

Through his education support initiative, about 700 students across the constituency, including 200 from Ohuhu, have benefited from educational assistance.

He also facilitated employment opportunities for 15 constituents in various federal ministries, departments and agencies.

In another intervention, he helped secure the reinstatement of constituents who were previously dismissed from public service, ensuring they recovered both their positions and outstanding salaries.

His advocacy extended beyond his constituency when he contributed to efforts that restored the validity of certificates belonging to over 22,000 Nigerians affected by the 2017 ban on degrees obtained from institutions in Benin Republic and Togo. The intervention helped many regain employment opportunities, NYSC eligibility and career progression.

He also supported advocacy that contributed to reversing proposed increases in WAEC and NECO examination fees, easing financial pressure on many Nigerian families.

Agriculture, Food Support and Compassionate Leadership

Amid prevailing economic challenges, Aguocha has implemented several welfare initiatives targeted at vulnerable residents.

His office distributed 600 bags of fertiliser to farmers to encourage agricultural productivity and strengthen local food production.

In addition, about 10,000 bags of rice, beans and other food items were shared among vulnerable individuals, churches, associations, wards and community groups throughout the constituency.

Medical assistance programmes have equally formed part of his constituency outreach, reinforcing efforts to support residents during difficult economic times.

In a gesture that reflects personal commitment to social welfare, he initiated the construction of a new home for an indigent widow in Umuafiaka Nkwoegwu, a project reported to be about 95 per cent complete.

Plans have also been announced for the phased construction of nine additional houses for vulnerable persons in communities including Avonku Ibeku, Ibere and Amachara.

A Strong Case Ahead of 2027

As the countdown to the 2027 general elections continues, the people of Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency will determine whether Hon. Obi Aguocha deserves another term in the House of Representatives.

His supporters argue that his achievements present a convincing case built on legislative productivity, constituency development, educational advancement, improved infrastructure, youth empowerment, social welfare, employment facilitation and advocacy for justice.
