The Abia State Government has commenced the first phase of distributing 50 electricity transformers to communities across the state’s 17 Local Government Areas as part of efforts to improve electricity access and strengthen power infrastructure, particularly in rural communities.
The initiative, which aligns with Governor Alex Otti’s commitment to expanding access to reliable electricity, is expected to reconnect several communities that have remained without power due to faulty or unavailable transformers.
Speaking during the official distribution of the transformers at the Ministry’s headquarters on Friday, July 24, 2026, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, said the exercise reflects the state government’s determination to consolidate electricity infrastructure and improve power supply across Abia.
According to the Commissioner, the transformers will be installed in various communities across Umuahia and other parts of the state to strengthen existing electricity networks and enhance the stability and quality of power supply.
He explained that the intervention is designed to restore electricity to communities that have experienced prolonged outages caused by transformer failures.
“This distribution is in line with the directive of Governor Alex Otti to improve electricity infrastructure throughout Abia State. Our goal is to ensure that more communities, especially those in rural areas, have access to reliable power,” Engr. Monday said.
He further disclosed that the ongoing exercise represents only the first phase of the programme, with 50 communities benefiting in the current batch. Another 50 communities are expected to receive transformers during the second phase scheduled for the third quarter of 2026.
According to him, the government intends to sustain the intervention until electricity challenges affecting communities across the state are significantly reduced.
Explaining how beneficiary communities were selected, Engr. Monday stated that the Ministry adopted a transparent, needs-based approach to ensure that areas facing the most severe electricity challenges received priority.
He noted that although numerous applications were submitted, each request was carefully assessed before approval.
“We consider the actual needs of each community. Some communities already have multiple functional transformers but still apply whenever distribution begins. Our responsibility is to ensure these facilities go to areas where they are most needed, while also observing fairness in the process,” he explained.
The Commissioner also stressed the importance of protecting the newly distributed transformers from vandalism, describing community participation as essential to safeguarding public infrastructure.
He revealed that every beneficiary community must sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry, accepting responsibility for protecting the transformer after installation.
According to him, while the government will continue collaborating with security agencies, including the military, the Nigeria Police, Homeland Security and local vigilante groups, community ownership remains the most effective way to prevent vandalism.
“It is not the government’s responsibility alone. Once a transformer is vandalised, the entire community suffers. That is why every beneficiary community signs an agreement to protect the facility,” he added.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiary communities, the member representing Umuahia Central State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Anthony Chinasa Abiola, who received a transformer for Ward 3, Umuahia Central, expressed appreciation to Governor Alex Otti for prioritising improved electricity across the state.
Also speaking, the President General of Egwuneleke Autonomous Community in Okaiuga Nkwoegwu, Engr. Victor Ihediwa, who received a transformer on behalf of Nkwoegwu Community, thanked the Governor and the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities for ensuring a transparent and seamless distribution process.
The beneficiaries pledged to protect the transformers and ensure they are properly maintained for the benefit of their communities.

The transformer distribution programme forms part of the Abia State Government’s broader strategy to improve electricity infrastructure, support rural development and stimulate economic growth by providing more communities with access to stable and reliable power.
