The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned political parties and candidates against violence, hate speech, inflammatory rhetoric and the mobilisation of armed groups ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, gave the warning in Abuja on Tuesday, August 18, during the signing of the First National Peace Accord for the 2027 elections. He stressed that the success of credible and peaceful elections depends not only on the electoral commission but also on the conduct and responsibility of political actors.
Amupitan disclosed that campaigns and political rallies for the 2027 elections would officially commence on Wednesday, August 19. He urged politicians to make the electoral contest about policies, programmes and solutions to the challenges facing Nigerians rather than personal attacks or character assassination.
The INEC chairman also cautioned political actors against identity-based politics, hate speech, incitement and the spread of digital disinformation, warning that such activities could heighten tensions and undermine the credibility of the electoral process.
He further condemned the use of private armed groups and other forms of political intimidation, calling on party leaders and candidates to ensure that their supporters at the state, local government and grassroots levels comply with the commitments contained in the peace accord.
The Nigeria Police Force, in its own commitment to the process, pledged to remain professional and impartial throughout the electoral period. The police also warned political leaders against recruiting or mobilising young Nigerians for violent activities.
The National Peace Committee said it has facilitated about 30 peace accords since 2015, describing the initiative as an important mechanism for promoting peaceful political competition and preventing election-related violence.
The committee urged political parties and candidates to respect democratic institutions, protect voters and accept the rules of the electoral contest.
