FG Unveils Education, Skills and Creative Economy Reforms at UniAbuja Dialogue

The Federal Ministry of Education has announced a sweeping set of reforms aimed at reshaping Nigeria’s education landscape, with a strong focus on skills development, digital innovation, and the creative economy.

The disclosure was made during the Renewed Hope Conversations held at the University of Abuja, where the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, engaged key stakeholders on strategies to align Nigeria’s education system with global best practices.

According to the Minister, the Federal Government is shifting away from a largely theory-driven model toward a more practical, skill-based approach that prioritizes innovation and technology. He emphasized the integration of emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, and digital technologies into academic curricula.

Entrepreneurship initiatives, including the EIBC programme, are also being strengthened to encourage job creation among young Nigerians.

Dr. Alausa further revealed that tertiary institutions across the country are experiencing improvements in digital infrastructure. These include the deployment of mini-grid power solutions, provision of free internet access, and the introduction of modern learning management systems, supported by ongoing nationwide fibre connectivity projects.

In addition, the government is scaling up Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes, which have already attracted over 160,000 participants, with increasing demand expected. To further support innovation, initiatives such as the Student Venture Capital Grant are being implemented, alongside plans to establish a National Research and Development Fund to drive research commercialization and economic growth.
