Makinde’s ‘Operation Wetie’ Remark Sparks APC Outrage Over Alleged Incitement

Tensions have escalated in Nigeria’s political landscape after Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, referenced the infamous “Operation Wetie” during a high-level opposition gathering in Ibadan. The comment has drawn sharp criticism from the All Progressives Congress (APC), which accused the governor of making statements capable of inciting violence.

The controversy stems from a political summit attended by prominent opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Kwankwaso. At the meeting, leaders unveiled what has been described as the “Ibadan Declaration,” a strategic move aimed at uniting opposition parties behind a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While addressing attendees, Makinde reportedly invoked “Operation Wetie” a violent episode associated with the political crises of the 1960s in Western Nigeria as a historical reference point. The period, often described as the “Wild Wild West,” was marked by intense electoral disputes and widespread unrest.

Reacting swiftly, the APC condemned the governor’s remarks, describing them as reckless and dangerous. The ruling party argued that such references, especially from a sitting governor and chief security officer of a state, could threaten national stability. It further called on security agencies to take note of the statement, warning against rhetoric that might inflame tensions.

In a strongly worded reaction, the APC maintained that invoking a dark chapter of Nigeria’s political history in a charged political atmosphere sends the wrong signal. The party insisted that leaders must exercise restraint and promote peace, particularly as political activities ahead of 2027 begin to gather momentum.

However, members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) pushed back against the criticism. They argued that Makinde’s comment was taken out of context, explaining that the governor merely used the historical reference as a cautionary reminder of the dangers of political intolerance and electoral violence.

Supporters of the opposition further suggested that the APC’s reaction reflects growing anxiety over the emerging coalition talks ahead of the next presidential election. They maintained that the “Ibadan Declaration” represents a legitimate democratic effort to strengthen opposition unity rather than a threat to national peace.

The debate has since sparked wider discussions across political circles, with analysts warning that rhetoric from both sides must be carefully managed. As Nigeria approaches another election cycle, observers emphasize the need for responsible communication to avoid reigniting memories of past political violence.
