The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Imo/Abia Area Command, has initiated plans to revive its long-dormant Umuahia out-station in Abia State, signaling a renewed push to improve operational efficiency and deepen collaboration with sister security agencies.
This development follows a two-day working visit by the Customs Area Controller (CAC), Blessing Ihenacho, to key formations within the Command. The visit, conducted between January 13 and 14, 2026, involved facility inspections, stakeholder engagements, and strategic meetings aimed at boosting service delivery.
According to a statement released by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Aligwekwe, the inspection tour covered bonded terminals, excise factories, and operational units across Imo and Abia States. The CAC also paid courtesy visits to other security agencies to reinforce cooperation and synergy.
A major focus of the visit was the assessment of the Umuahia out-station, which has remained inactive for over three years due to operational challenges. The facility, including office buildings and residential quarters, was discovered to be in a deteriorated condition, requiring urgent attention.
In response, Comptroller Ihenacho ordered an immediate clean-up of the premises as an interim measure while awaiting formal approval from the Service Headquarters for full-scale rehabilitation. Early restoration efforts have already begun, including repairs to the borehole system and renovation of six residential units to accommodate personnel.
The reopening of the out-station is expected to enhance Customs’ presence closer to bonded terminals and excise facilities in Abia State. This, in turn, will improve monitoring, regulatory compliance, and revenue generation.
Beyond infrastructure upgrades, the initiative also highlights the Command’s commitment to strengthening inter-agency cooperation. During her visit, the CAC engaged heads of relevant security agencies, stressing the importance of collaboration in tackling shared operational challenges.
She also met with terminal operators and excise traders, encouraging strict compliance with existing regulations while reaffirming the Service’s dedication to facilitating trade and supporting stakeholders.
