The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved a waiver exempting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from undergoing the party’s screening process ahead of its forthcoming primary elections.
The decision was reached during the NWC’s 188th meeting, where members unanimously agreed to recognize the President as already cleared to contest, without the need to appear before a screening panel. According to the committee, this move aligns with provisions in the APC Constitution, specifically Article 13.4 (xiii) and (xiv), which empower the NWC to organize party primaries and grant waivers when deemed necessary for the party’s overall interest.
In an official statement released after the meeting, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, explained that the waiver reflects the widespread support President Tinubu continues to enjoy within the party. He cited endorsements and votes of confidence from key stakeholders, including the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), members of the National Assembly, and other party structures.
The statement also referenced the APC National Summit held on May 22, 2025, along with subsequent statutory gatherings, where strong backing for the President was reaffirmed.
The party emphasized that, as the sitting President and recognized leader of the APC, Tinubu had already undergone a thorough screening process prior to the 2022 presidential primaries. Requiring him to repeat the process at this stage, the NWC noted, would be unnecessary and duplicative.
