The Abia State Police Command has reacted to a viral social media video showing the alleged assault of a young woman and her brother by armed men in Okigwe, Imo State.
The incident, which generated widespread reactions online, reportedly involved the siblings while they were travelling to Abia State University (ABSU).
In a statement issued on September 7, 2026, the Abia State Police Command clarified that the incident did not occur within its jurisdiction and that the men seen in the video were not officers of the Abia State Police Command.
According to the Command, preliminary investigations and information obtained from the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) responsible for the area indicate that the suspects are members of a community vigilante group operating in the area.
The police further disclosed that the DPO had visited the scene of the incident, while the suspects had been apprehended for questioning and investigation.
The Command said it is awaiting an official statement from the Imo State Police Command, where the incident occurred, as investigations continue.
The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, psc+, mnips, JP, reaffirmed the commitment of officers under his command to professionalism, discipline and responsible conduct while carrying out their duties.
He also warned that any police officer found guilty of misconduct or violation of professional standards would face appropriate disciplinary measures.
The Abia Police Command consequently appealed to members of the public to exercise caution when sharing information on social media, particularly regarding sensitive security incidents.
The Command urged Abians to verify reports through credible and appropriate authorities before liking, reposting or circulating them, stressing that the spread of unverified information could heighten tension, undermine public confidence and create security concerns.
The police called for collective responsibility in promoting peace and security across the state, urging residents to reject the circulation of misinformation.

The Command concluded its message with the call: “NO TO MISINFORMATION.”
