Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), is tightening its hold on the National Assembly following a fresh wave of defections in the Senate.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio revealed that the APC now commands about 87 senators out of the 106-member chamber. He hinted that more lawmakers could soon join the party, noting that several ongoing negotiations may further increase APC’s dominance in the coming weeks.
According to Akpabio, the party is working toward consolidating its majority, with discussions still underway involving over twenty senators. He emphasized the goal of building a united legislative front once the talks are concluded.
In a significant political shift, Senator Osita Ngwu, who represents Enugu West and previously served as the Minority Whip, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. His move marks a notable gain for the ruling party in the Southeast.
Similarly, Senator Anthony Siyako Yaro, representing Gombe South, also announced his defection from the PDP to the APC on the Senate floor, further strengthening the party’s numbers in the Red Chamber.
