The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has issued a stern warning to electoral officers ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, saying misconduct, negligence and partisan behaviour will attract consequences.
Amupitan gave the warning on Monday, September 7, 2026, during the commission’s South-West Zonal Interactive Meeting with staff in Lagos, where he stressed the importance of professionalism and strict adherence to electoral laws.
The INEC chairman said electoral officers must remain politically neutral and carry out their responsibilities with integrity, noting that the credibility of the 2027 elections would depend significantly on how effectively officials implement the law and established electoral guidelines.
According to him, partisan tendencies, administrative negligence and compromised ethics would not be tolerated under his leadership. He also directed officials to comply with the commission’s code of conduct and protect the institutional integrity of INEC.
Amupitan further urged electoral officers to understand the law governing their responsibilities and properly document their actions throughout the electoral process.
He stressed that where electoral laws prescribe specific procedures, officials must follow them, while operational challenges should be reported through the appropriate institutional channels rather than handled outside established procedures.
The INEC chairman maintained that neither a well-designed Electoral Act nor advanced electoral technology could independently guarantee credible elections without committed personnel to implement the rules faithfully.
He therefore called on electoral officers to see themselves as critical custodians of Nigeria’s democratic process and to avoid actions capable of undermining public confidence in the commission.
The warning is part of INEC’s broader preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the commission repeatedly emphasising professionalism, transparency and integrity among its personnel. Earlier, Amupitan had similarly warned staff that administrative misconduct would attract sanctions while urging them to work selflessly and reject corruption.
With the 2027 elections expected to attract significant national and international attention, the INEC leadership is seeking to strengthen internal discipline and ensure that electoral personnel perform their duties without political bias or compromise.
