GADA Evacuates Residents as Cracks Threaten Collapse of Four-Storey Building in Aba
The Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA) has evacuated residents from a four-storey building located at No. 71 Clifford Road, Aba, after structural engineers discovered severe foundation cracks that pose a significant risk of collapse.
According to a press statement issued on Thursday, July 9, 2026, the Authority’s Building Control Unit, Engineering Department, and Town Planning Department responded immediately after receiving reports of visible cracks on the building.
A preliminary structural assessment revealed extensive cracking around the building’s foundation, indicating that the integrity of the structure has been seriously compromised. Based on the findings, GADA declared the building unsafe for habitation and ordered the immediate evacuation of all occupants to prevent any loss of life.
The Authority disclosed that all residents were safely evacuated and that arrangements are underway for the controlled demolition of the building. Officials said the demolition process will be carefully managed to ensure the safety of nearby residents and to prevent damage to surrounding properties.
GADA reassured members of the public that the situation remains under control and urged residents not to panic. The Authority emphasized that adequate safety measures have already been put in place and advised members of the public to stay away from the affected area while emergency operations continue.
The agency also announced that a comprehensive investigation has commenced to determine the exact cause of the structural failure. The outcome of the investigation is expected to guide future preventive measures and strengthen building safety enforcement across Aba.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, GADA encouraged residents to promptly report any buildings showing signs of structural distress, such as cracks, unusual settlement, or other visible defects, to the appropriate authorities for immediate inspection and intervention.
The statement was signed by the Director General of the Greater Aba Development Authority, Arc. Uche Ukeje, on July 9, 2026.
