The Government of Ghana has commenced plans to evacuate hundreds of its citizens from South Africa following a fresh wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of the country.
According to reports, about 300 Ghanaian nationals have registered for evacuation assistance through the Ghana High Commission after renewed anti-immigrant protests and violent incidents created fear among African migrants living in South Africa.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, confirmed that the evacuation exercise received approval from President John Mahama as authorities moved swiftly to protect affected citizens.
The development comes amid growing concerns over attacks and threats directed at migrants from other African countries, with several videos of violent incidents circulating widely on social media. Ghanaian authorities have strongly condemned the attacks and assured citizens of the government’s commitment to ensuring their safety both at home and abroad.
Reports indicate that other African countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Lesotho, have also warned their citizens in South Africa to remain cautious amid the unrest.
South African authorities have acknowledged concerns surrounding illegal immigration while condemning the violence linked to xenophobic attacks. The government has also pledged to intensify efforts to restore calm and prevent further attacks on foreign nationals.
