“Kano State Ram Prices Hit N700,000 as Sellers Lament Low Patronage Ahead of Eid-el-Kabir”
As preparations intensify for the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebration, many Muslim faithful in Kano State have expressed concern over the sharp increase in the price of rams, with some sellers demanding as much as N700,000 for a single animal.
The development has sparked frustration among residents and buyers, many of whom say the soaring cost of livestock is making it increasingly difficult for average families to participate fully in the annual religious celebration.
Traders at major livestock markets across Kano blamed the situation on the rising cost of transportation, insecurity affecting cattle routes, and inflation in the country’s economy. According to several ram sellers, the prices of feeding materials and the high cost of moving animals from northern and neighboring regions have significantly affected market prices this year.
Some of the larger and healthier rams are reportedly selling between N500,000 and N700,000, while medium-sized animals are priced from N250,000 upward. Buyers noted that the prices are far higher compared to previous years, forcing many families to either settle for smaller animals or postpone purchases entirely.
Despite the festive season drawing closer, sellers also lamented low patronage in the markets. Many traders revealed that customers now spend more time bargaining and often leave without making purchases due to financial difficulties.
A livestock dealer in Kano explained that business has remained slow because many Nigerians are struggling with the rising cost of living. He added that although traders are eager to sell, the economic reality has reduced the purchasing power of many households.
Residents who spoke on the development urged the government to implement measures that would ease economic hardship and reduce inflation, especially during festive periods when demand for food and livestock usually increases.
