Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has donated ₦10 million to support the rebuilding of a fire-damaged nursery and primary school in Agulu, Anambra State.
The donation was presented to Practising Nursery and Primary School during a handover ceremony held on May 7, 2026, following the devastating fire incident that destroyed parts of the school in December 2024. The fire, reportedly caused by bush burning, left several classrooms without roofs and disrupted academic activities for many pupils.
Agulu, which is Obi’s hometown, witnessed an outpouring of support and appreciation from residents and education stakeholders during the event. Many described the intervention as another example of Obi’s long-standing commitment to education and community development.
Speaking during the visit, Obi stressed the importance of protecting schools and creating safer learning environments for children across the country. Drawing from his experience as a former governor of Anambra State, he urged government authorities and community leaders to take proactive measures to prevent similar incidents in schools.
He noted that investment in education remains one of the most effective ways to secure the future of young Nigerians, adding that children deserve access to safe and conducive learning spaces regardless of their background.
Supporters at the event praised Obi for personally engaging with the pupils and showing concern for their welfare. Videos and photos from the visit also circulated online, highlighting his warm interaction with the children and school officials.
However, some critics questioned whether the ₦10 million donation would be enough to fully restore the damaged structures and provide all the facilities needed for the affected pupils. Despite the debate, many residents believe the contribution will significantly assist ongoing rebuilding efforts and inspire additional support from individuals and organizations.
