Tinubu Appoints Prof. Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe as Chairman of NUC Governing Board
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe as the Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The appointment is expected to strengthen leadership and policy direction within Nigeria’s higher education sector, as the Federal Government continues efforts to improve the quality, governance, and global competitiveness of universities across the country.
Professor Ogundipe is a respected academic and renowned botanist with decades of experience in university administration. He previously served as the 12th Vice-Chancellor of University of Lagos (UNILAG) from 2017 to 2022, where he championed academic reforms, research development, and institutional growth.
Before becoming Vice-Chancellor, Ogundipe held several strategic positions within the university, including Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Research), Director of Academic Planning, and Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies. His extensive experience in higher education administration has earned him recognition within Nigeria and internationally.
A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, Professor Ogundipe obtained his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees in Botany before later earning a Master’s degree in Business Administration from UNILAG.

Stakeholders in the education sector have described the appointment as a significant step toward advancing the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope agenda for education, particularly in strengthening university governance, improving research output, and promoting institutional accountability.
The National Universities Commission remains Nigeria’s principal regulatory body responsible for overseeing university education, maintaining academic standards, approving programmes, and coordinating policies aimed at improving tertiary education nationwide.
