Supreme Court Orders Final Forfeiture of Seven Luxury Properties Linked to Ex-CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele
Nigeria’s Supreme Court has ordered the final forfeiture of seven luxury properties linked to former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, bringing a significant legal battle over the assets to a close.
In a unanimous judgment delivered by a five-member panel led by Justice Ibrahim Saulawa, the apex court overturned the earlier decision of the Court of Appeal, which had directed that the case be retried. The Supreme Court instead restored the Federal High Court’s ruling that ordered the final forfeiture of the properties to the Federal Government.
The ruling effectively ends Emefiele’s legal challenge against the confiscation of the luxury assets, which had been the subject of prolonged court proceedings.
The properties were previously declared forfeited by the Federal High Court in Lagos after the court found sufficient grounds to grant the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s application for their permanent forfeiture. However, the Court of Appeal later set aside that decision and ordered a fresh hearing, prompting further legal action before the Supreme Court.
With the latest judgment, the Supreme Court affirmed that the Federal High Court’s decision remains valid, bringing finality to the dispute over the ownership of the seven luxury properties.
The decision marks another significant development in Nigeria’s anti-corruption and asset recovery efforts, as authorities continue to pursue the recovery of assets believed to have been acquired through unlawful means.
Godwin Emefiele, who served as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria from 2014 to 2023, has faced multiple legal proceedings following his removal from office, including allegations of financial misconduct. Several of the cases remain before different courts.
