JUST IN: INEC Considers Electoral Technology Audit, Mock Presidential Election Ahead of 2027 Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced plans to consider a comprehensive audit of its electoral technology systems and conduct a mock presidential election as part of its preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

The disclosure was made following the commission’s review of recent electoral processes and ongoing efforts to strengthen the credibility, transparency, and efficiency of future elections across the country.

According to INEC, the proposed technology audit is intended to thoroughly examine all critical electoral systems used during elections. These include the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal, voter registration platforms, result management infrastructure, cybersecurity frameworks, and other digital tools that support election administration.

The commission said the exercise would help identify potential technical vulnerabilities, improve system reliability, and ensure that all electoral technologies are fully prepared ahead of the 2027 polls.

In addition to the technology assessment, INEC is also considering organizing a mock presidential election. The exercise would simulate a nationwide presidential poll to test the functionality, efficiency, and resilience of its election management systems under conditions similar to those expected during the actual general election.

Election officials believe such a nationwide simulation would provide an opportunity to evaluate logistics, technology performance, communication systems, result transmission processes, and operational coordination before Nigerians head to the polls in 2027.

The proposed mock election would also allow the commission to identify operational challenges, train election personnel more effectively, and address any shortcomings long before the official election period.

The initiative forms part of INEC’s broader strategy to build public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process following lessons learned from previous elections. The commission has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to improving election management through innovation, stakeholder engagement, and continuous review of its procedures.

While no date has yet been announced for either the technology audit or the mock presidential election, INEC stated that consultations and planning are ongoing as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

Political observers say the proposed measures, if implemented, could significantly enhance the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process by ensuring that technological systems are thoroughly tested and capable of delivering transparent and efficient elections.

As preparations continue, stakeholders are expected to closely monitor the commission’s next steps regarding the proposed audit and nationwide mock election.
