Former APC Board Chairman Nduka Anyanwu Defects to Labour Party, Moves With Over 700 Supporters
The Labour Party (LP) in Abia State has received a major political boost following the defection of former All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Nduka Anyanwu, alongside more than 700 of his supporters and political associates.
The announcement was made in a statement issued on Friday by the Labour Party’s Publicity Secretary in Abia State, Emenike Iroegbu, after members of the party’s State Working Committee paid a courtesy visit to Anyanwu following his decision to join the party.
Anyanwu is a former member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the APC and previously served as the Governing Board Chairman of the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON). He is also recognised as one of the founding members of the APC both in Abia State and nationally.
Speaking during the visit, Anyanwu explained that his decision to leave the APC was entirely personal and not influenced by any individual or political pressure. According to him, his move was motivated by the visible developmental strides being recorded under the administration of Abia State Governor, Alex Otti.
He praised the governor’s performance, stating that ongoing improvements in infrastructure, public services and governance are evident across the state.
According to Anyanwu, the transformation taking place in Abia has positively changed the perception of many residents, including members of his own family.
He revealed that his wife has become one of Governor Otti’s strongest supporters after witnessing the ongoing projects, while his children are now more eager to visit home because of the state’s renewed appeal.
The former APC stalwart said he could no longer justify remaining in a different political party while openly supporting the developmental agenda of the current administration.
Anyanwu emphasized that his decision was not driven by personal ambition or expectations of political rewards, but by a desire to contribute meaningfully to Abia’s progress.
He further disclosed that he is joining the Labour Party with more than 700 members of his political structure and loyal supporters, a move that could strengthen the party’s grassroots influence ahead of future political contests in the state.
Political observers believe the defection may further consolidate the Labour Party’s position in Abia, especially as Governor Alex Otti continues to receive endorsements from prominent political figures and stakeholders across the state.
