Governor Alex Otti has commissioned 13 newly rehabilitated road projects across Aba and flagged off the construction of the first phase of the Aba Ring Road as part of activities marking his administration’s third anniversary in office.
The projects, spread across Osisioma, Aba North and Aba South Local Government Areas, are aimed at improving transportation, easing traffic congestion and boosting economic activities within the commercial city of Aba.
The roads commissioned include Aro Amano–Eke Aro Road, Adaelu Road, Geometric Road, Afule Road, Assemblies of God Church Road, Kingdom Hall Street, Nwogu Ajagba Street, Nwala Street, Sacred Heart Street, Elizabeth Avenue, Nigerian Brewery Ring Road, Etche Road, Mosque Road and Crystal Park Road.
Governor Otti, while speaking during the commissioning ceremony on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, said the projects were strategically executed to improve connectivity within Aba and provide easier access to neighbouring communities and states.
He noted that the rehabilitation of the roads would help reduce the heavy traffic often experienced within Aba metropolis while creating a more business-friendly environment for investors and residents.
According to the governor, the newly completed Geometric Road would encourage industrial growth in the area, recalling how difficult the road had been before reconstruction.
He stressed that the roads were built according to approved specifications and are meant to serve all residents of Abia State regardless of political or social affiliation.
Speaking further on the importance of Afule Road, Governor Otti described the project as a major bypass designed to divert heavy-duty vehicles and through-traffic away from the busy Aba-Owerri Road and city centre.
He explained that commuters traveling to states such as Akwa Ibom and Cross River, as well as areas like Obingwa, would now have smoother access without necessarily entering the crowded city centre.
The governor also highlighted the quality of the project, noting that the roads were equipped with drainage systems and solar-powered street lights to ensure durability and safety.
In addition, Governor Otti officially flagged off the construction of the first phase of the 4.5-kilometre Aba Ring Road project, which stretches through Umuaduru–Okpulo Umuobo in Osisioma LGA.
The project, being handled by the Greater Aba Development Authority, is expected to serve as an alternative route around Aba and further decongest the city.
Governor Otti described the ring road as a strategic infrastructure initiative that aligns with his administration’s urban renewal and economic expansion agenda.
He also disclosed that his government ensures contractors mobilize to site and commence work before any official project flag-off ceremony is held.
The Commissioner for Works, Otumchere Oti, stated that many of the roads had become nearly impassable during the rainy season before the governor approved their rehabilitation through direct labour.
He added that the projects were executed with asphaltic concrete, proper drainage channels, stone base, road markings and solar street lighting.
Also speaking, the Director-General of the Greater Aba Development Authority, Uche Ukeje, said the Aba Ring Road project would significantly improve movement around Aba and reduce traffic gridlock across the city.
