NIHSA Issues Flood Alert for 14 Nigerian States, Calls for Immediate Precautionary Measures
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has alerted residents and authorities in 14 states to a medium flood risk, urging them to take proactive steps as heavy rainfall is expected to continue in parts of the country.
The warning, which covers the period from July 14 to July 20, 2026, is part of NIHSA’s ongoing flood monitoring and early warning efforts aimed at reducing the impact of flooding on communities, infrastructure, and economic activities.
States identified in the latest advisory include Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Gombe, Jigawa, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Rivers. The agency noted that residents living in flood-prone communities, particularly those close to rivers and low-lying areas, should remain vigilant throughout the forecast period.
NIHSA encouraged state governments, emergency response agencies, and local authorities to activate flood preparedness measures, clear blocked drainage channels, and intensify public awareness campaigns. Residents were also advised to stay informed through official weather updates and comply with any evacuation directives if necessary.
The agency stressed that timely preparation and coordinated response are essential to minimizing the effects of seasonal flooding, which has repeatedly caused loss of lives, displaced communities, and damaged homes, roads, and farmlands across Nigeria.
