BREAKING: NUT Announces Nationwide Protest Over Abducted Teachers, Students in Oyo

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has announced a nationwide solidarity protest scheduled for Tuesday following the continued abduction of teachers and students from schools in Oyo State.

The planned protest comes amid growing concern over the safety of educators and learners who were kidnapped during attacks on schools in Oriire Local Government Area. The union said the action is aimed at drawing national attention to the worsening security situation in schools and demanding the immediate rescue of the victims.

Speaking on the development, NUT National President, Audu Titus Amba, expressed frustration over the prolonged captivity of the abducted teachers and students. He noted that several teachers remain in the custody of their captors despite ongoing rescue efforts, stressing that the union can no longer remain silent while its members face increasing threats.

As part of its response, the union directed public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to withdraw their services indefinitely from Monday. The nationwide solidarity protest is expected to take place across various state capitals, with teachers calling on government authorities and security agencies to intensify efforts toward securing the safe release of the victims.

The abduction, which occurred in May, reportedly involved dozens of students and teachers from schools within the Oriire area. The incident has sparked widespread outrage among education stakeholders, parents, and civil society groups, many of whom have raised concerns over the recurring attacks on schools across the country.

The NUT said the continued captivity of the victims has created fear and anxiety within the education sector, affecting both teaching activities and public confidence in school safety. The union also urged the Federal Government and state authorities to strengthen security measures around schools to prevent future attacks.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Federal Government has deployed additional security measures to support rescue operations and improve security in affected communities. Authorities have assured residents that efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the kidnapped teachers and students.
