Tinubu to Address National Assembly as Nigeria Marks 27th Democracy Day

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to deliver a joint address to the National Assembly on June 12, 2026, as part of activities lined up to commemorate Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary.

The announcement was made by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) responsible for coordinating the national celebrations.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, stated that the President’s address would serve as one of the major highlights of this year’s Democracy Day programme.

According to Akume, Democracy Day remains an important occasion for Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and honour the sacrifices of individuals who fought for the restoration of democratic governance. He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle, particularly the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose contributions remain central to Nigeria’s democratic history.

The SGF noted that the annual celebration also provides an opportunity for the Federal Government to showcase progress made in strengthening democratic institutions, promoting good governance, and advancing national development despite prevailing economic and social challenges.

With preparations entering the final phase, Senator Akume urged members of the Inter-Ministerial Committee to intensify efforts to ensure a successful commemoration. He emphasized that the events planned for this year would be modest, reflecting the government’s commitment to prudent spending and fiscal responsibility while maintaining the significance of the national celebration.

As part of the approved programme for the 2026 Democracy Day anniversary, a World Press Conference is scheduled for June 4, followed by Special Juma’at Prayers on June 5 and an Inter-denominational Church Service on June 7.

Other activities include a Democracy Day Public Lecture on June 9 and special youth and women-focused programmes on June 10. On June 12, President Tinubu will deliver a national broadcast in addition to addressing the National Assembly, while a Democracy Day Gala Night will conclude the day’s events.
